Most of us love to decorate our personal space, like, home, office, dorm room, apartment, etc. We decorate our space with various kinds of objects known as “art.” The goal of this exercise is for you to reflect on whether you decorate the place you live and/or work with “art,” what kind it is, and why you chose it. So what is art, according to anthropologists? Schultz and Lavenda define art as “a play with form producing some aesthetically successful transformation-representation. Transformation-representation means the process of transforming experience as it is represented symbolically in a different medium.” Thus, art is both the process and the product of applying specific skills to any activity that transforms matter, sound, or motion into an aesthetically meaningful form to people in a society. Art is of two types: (1) Art by intention: includes objects made to be art, such as paintings; (2) Art by appropriation: consists of all the objects that “become art” because at a particular moment people decide that they belonged to the category of art, for example, displaying a ceramic plate in the living room.
