This week as we discuss how class, race, and gender create structural inequalities that produce different contexts for families I would like each of you to do some research on family leave policies across the globe. Caring for a newborn child and taking time away from work allows parent and child to bond, and there are many studies indicating how this has long term benefits to the child. Unfortunately, the USA has one of the worst family leave policies of all modernized societies. The power structures that we have learned about this week have a lot to do with this policy. Read here: https://www.dol.gov/whd/fmla/ to see what the policy is.
Your assignment this week is to select a country of your own interest and do some research on what the family leave policy of that country is. Remember, no one regulates what is put up on websites, so do your best to find a peer reviewed research article or website that belongs to the/a governmental entity. Legitimate news sites are okay.
• Title your post with the name of the country you chose. • Report back on your country of interest. • Tell us what the leave policy is in the country you chose. • How might a person’s race, class or gender impact inequalities in this policy in this country (ie, in the USA FLMA is unpaid unless a person has accrued vacation or sick time to use. This creates a disadvantage for the working poor that often don’t get benefits and can’t afford to take unpaid leave). Do you feel that the family leave policy of this country is better or worse that that of the USA? Why and how so? • Reflect on your own experiences with FMLA policies and what change you’d like to see.
Remember,
• You need at least 2 citations and references, one from the course content this week and one for your article/website. • Post early in the week to get quick peer responses. • Reply to peers that don’t yet have 2 replies. • You need a total of 5 posts to receive full credit. • Having trouble with APA style?
