Essay #2: Analyzing Symbols; Length – 4 Full Pages; Points – 100 (*bypassing draft for now)

Analyze a sign, logo, symbol, or advertisement for the way in which the piece…

1) strategically engages the viewer’s attention

2) influences viewers’ thoughts (connotation) about the company behind the symbol (keeping abduction in mind). *Here, you are analyzing how the ad is trying to get its message across, not determining how others would react to it.

3) targets a specific audience or buyer (as per Twitchell)

*The key here is to analyze—not describe—the image. Hidden or implied messages are of greater value than are direct messages.

In approaching this essay task, it is highly recommended that you consider the various appeals advertisers make as seen in Solomon (SL, 152-159) and Schor (197-206), as well as the various types of consumers identified in Twitchell (SL, 163-166), since the image you are analyzing may fall into one or many of the categories addressed in those articles; these can serve as topics for your body paragraphs. I also want to see separate observations of your own making concerning the image. Unify your main ideas into one clear thesis.

Variant Approaches Available

Apart from a logo, symbol or advertisement, you can analyze a particular style of dress (though not a product). You may choose to discuss a public service campaign of some kind, but be careful not to select something too broad and difficult to engage thoroughly. If you so choose, you can do an oppositional reading of the piece you are analyzing or just a paragraph that does oppositional reading. The essay MUST include a copy of the image (in its original color) behind the citation page. Make sure to select something you can write a lot about.

Research

This essay requires reference to at least one outside, non-textbook source to add depth and development to your essay. Sticking in quotes just for the sake of fulfilling the source requirement would not be helpful to your essay grade.
