INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE PAPER:

Write a short paper about a two-dimensional piece of artwork (drawing, painting, pastel, etc.) from an image from a national/international recognized art museum. The artwork must be recognized as a piece completed by a master (not a current unknown artist, art teacher, or relative). You must use the questions listed below as reference to complete your paper. Do not pick three-dimensional, such as a piece of sculpture or architecture. Insert the image at the end of your paper.

Approximate length of the paper should be two to three pages, double spaced. Do not use any larger than 12 point font, or wider than 1″ margins. Use either MLA, APA, or Chicago style format. No citations are necessary since there is no research involved. However, if the student chooses to add researched material, then citations must be included. The paper is worth 100 points.

The purpose of this paper is to provide you, the student, with an opportunity to express your perception of a piece of artwork. You are to describe the work, analyze the work, report or research information about symbolisms, if present, and then formulate your own opinion of the piece.

Answer these questions within your paper:

1. What is the name of artist?

2. What is the title of the art work?

3. When was the date of work completed?

4. List the medium used. (oil, watercolor, charcoal, etc.).

5. What is the subject matter? (portrait, landscape, historical scene, etc.)

6. What is the orientation and shape of work? (horizontal rectangle, vertical rectangle, square, oval, etc.).

7. What type of balance is present? (one side, center, foreground, background)

8. What is the major shape? (oval, rectangular, circular, triangular, etc.)

9. How are the lines presented? (linear or painterly)

10. How is the color (bright or dull) and value (light or dark)?

11. What type of texture is present? (smooth or rough)

12. Describe the work. What was the artist trying to portray?

13. If symbolism was used, explain it.

14. How do you personally feel about this work?

Type your paper in sentence and paragraph form. Do not list numbers with one word or sentence answers. You may place your answers in any order within your paper, rather than 1-14, if you so choose. Strive to make your sentences flow from one onto another. Remember to italicize artwork titles.

No late papers will be accepted.
