Workshop Assignment 5: Use LIRN to conduct further research on the claim you presented last week. Identify two articles on the same topic. Write a comparative summary (see text for a sample, p. 220-227)

2) Assignments to complete this week:

● Prior to Class

o Reading: Unit 5, pages 188-277

o Tasks: 1, 5, 14

Week 6: Tasks, 1, 5, 14 ANSWER KEY

TASK 1

Answers will vary.

TASK 2

Text 1: restates many of the facts given in the source; facts are important, but the perspective of the author toward the issue should be included: not the best choice.

Text 2: the level of details seems sufficient: this is a good choice

Text 3: seems rather thin; it is not clear why readers should be concerned about energy drinks

Text 4: clearly reveals a perspective; this is an okay choice–though the link between energy and drinks and caffeine has not been made

Text 5: this makes the connection between caffeine content and possible harm, but does not offer that many details. With additional information, this would be a good choice

TASK 3

It is reasonable to draw the line between the third and fourth statements. Clearly S3 is a gray area. The degree to which a person follows the fourth approach is very important.

TASK 4

S2: underline from “manufacturers” to “traffic accident.”

S3: underline from “with the increased importance” to “vehicle.”

S4: underline from “statistics” to “accidents”

S5: underline from “research” to “drivers”

S7: underline from “This” to “approach”

S10: underline from “to provide” to “situations”

TASK 5

Answers will vary. Here are some examples.

  • Driving safely may be decreased because drivers are distracted by technology such as cell phones and MP3 players and pay less attention to the road and the traffic.

Because drivers have access to non driving technology such as cell phones in their cars, they may be easily distracted and be less aware of the traffic flow and the road.

  • Drivers are increasingly distracted by technology in their vehicles that is not related to driving, leading to decreased attention to the road and other traffic.

The availability of technology in cars such as cell phones can lead to driver inattention and decreased focus on safe driving practices.

  • Important points

If there is an accident, passive safety systems can offer protection.

In this fourth workshop assignment , I learned a practical definition of ‘crime,’ the statistics of crime, and the types of illegal narcotics that have been linked to criminal activity. I focused on the prevalence of prejudice, stereotyping, bias, and discrimination in American courts. Understanding the impact of crime and drugs on our community requires establishing both individual and collective perspectives on people who deal with these issues. The social and political factors that exacerbate crime and drug use need to be questioned. Building these individual and collective fortitudes might help us figure out how to tackle these societal problems. Although crimes against property and violence against people receive more media coverage, the effects of organized crime and political crime on our society are no less serious.

Although initially promising, the War on Drugs has mostly failed to achieve its stated objective of making America drug-free. In reality, many people in our culture are addicted because legal medications have become addictive and are utilized in criminal ways. It is possible for Christians to extend a ministry of reconciliation to the criminal community by telling them that they may be forgiven for their sins and can start fresh with God. If you are in Christ, you are a new creature; the old has passed away and the new has arrived. All of these blessings come from God, who made peace with us by sending Christ and entrusted us with the ministry of reconciliation. As a result, God has made all things new in Christ and no longer holds people’s sins against them. Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:17–19 Various Christians have different reactions to the idea of reconciliation, as seen by these two models. The first is a person’s underlying ideologcial framework, which consists of their own set of beliefs and the way they organize their values to transmit to themselves the meaning of life. Then there’s operational structure, which refers to the habitual ways we conduct ourselves as a society (e.g., our tax system, our international trade agreements, and our healthcare system).

Our role as Christians is to advise, console, and aid others. When we’ve been wronged, we don’t go looking for payback. In its place, we beg God to have mercy on them. What I’ve learned about reconciliation is that it needs work on both sides for there to be any chance of a successful reunion.

Therefore, it is not possible for one side to be making attempts toward reconciling certain individuals, which, in my opinion, does not give results and does not assist. If neither person is prepared to put in the same level of effort to restore the relationship as you are, then it will never go back to where it was. Events have fundamentally altered my understanding of what reconciliation entails(Braga , 2019). A better reunion is introduced in the process of reconciliation, with the goal of re-establishing trust and confidence between the parties involved so that there may be peace and harmony in their relationships with one another. To change my behavior, I will stop holding grudges and learning to forgive. Previously, I was able to do more. God hopes his followers can get along with one another. Because he doesn’t want us to get into battles that go on and on, nor does he want us to harbor resentment against one another, but rather to forgive and go on.

Let’s just drop this and move on. Because he is kind and understands our hearts, he does not treat us this way. To put it simply, I now see the issue in a new light as a result of the reading, resources, experiential activity, and conversations. For instance, The Children’s Defense Fund launched the Cradle to Prison Pipeline campaign to raise awareness and spur action to end the practice of funneling thousands of kids, disproportionately those of color, down roads that inevitably lead to their arrest, conviction, incarceration, and even death. This is the kind of program Christians should make instead of demanding vengeance (Muehlmann,2018 ). We need to find ways to stop fighting and get the word out rather than resort to violence. Seeking vengeance will not solve the issue. Being at peace with others is central to the concept of reconciliation, as is the realization that vengeance serves no one, even children and adults.
