Why is the book titled Watchmen? Is that a good title for this work? Why or why not? If it is not a good title, what would be a better title?

In a 3-5 page essay, address four of the following using evidence from the text to back up your answers:

  1. Why is the book titled Watchmen? Is that a good title for this work? Why or why not? If it is not a good title, what would be a better title?
  2. Rorschach refuses to compromise and wants the world to know the truth about the genocide. Ozymandias believes that the peaceful result of his actions justifies the murderous means to that end. The other characters exist in a sort of “middle ground”. Which character is right? Use evidence from the text. There is no wrong answer here.
  3. This book is greater than the sum of its parts, but the parts, taken individually, are works of art. Pick a chapter from this book and examine some of the literary devices used in that chapter. (NO picking the flashbacks from chapter 2). Think symbolism, foreshadowing, theme, etc…
  4. Compare this book to another work of literature.
  5. What changes Jon’s mind about saving humanity? Explain the realization he has about the significance of human life. Discuss the symbolic meaning of Laurie’s destruction of his clockwork structure. (Chapter IX)
  6. How are the Comedian’s name and smiley face badge ironic?
  7. Discuss the meaning of Rorschach’s constantly shifting mask.
  8. Look at the covers to each chapter. Relate three or more covers to the events happening in that chapter.
  9. Look at the titles to each chapter. Relate three or more titles of chapters to the events in that chapter.
