The term, “Utopia” was famously coined by Thomas More in his book, Utopia. The following is taken from the Wikipedia page for the book:

“Utopia” is derived from the Greek prefix “ou-” (οὐ), meaning “not”, and topos (τόπος), “place”, with the suffix -iā (-ία) that is typical of toponyms; hence the name literally means “nowhere”, emphasizing its fictionality. In early modern English, Utopia was spelled “Utopie”, which is today rendered Utopy in some editions.[3]

What does Utopia mean to you? What would a Utopia look like if you designed it? How is a Utopia different or similar to the idea of a “good place” / a “common good”? Lastly, why do you think More created a word that means both “No Place” and “Good Place”?

The only rules of free-writing are…

1) Don’t stop writing

2) If you can’t think of anything to write, write “I can’t think of anything to write until time is up”

3) Don’t edit or revise –– Grammer & Spelling aren’t super important for this exercise

4) Write for the entire duration of the time allotted & submit as soon as that time is up.
