Scenario #1 — Suppose that a 19-year-old college student just left his place of employment and cashed his work check. He headed directly to a house party where he consumed a number of alcoholic beverages. Around 2:00 am, he left the party and was walking home. He decided to take a shortcut through a secluded alleyway when he was confronted by two armed male subjects who demanded that he empty his pockets. Fearing for his life, he did so and turned the money over to the robbers The robbers fled the scene.

Did the college student contribute to his own victimization? Why or why not? Could any measures have been taken to prevent this robbery?

Should a victims’ actions ever diminish the offender’s culpability (i.e. – blameworthiness) for an offense? That is, is it ethical for the the criminal justice system to take into account a victims’ actions when conducting investigations, when determining offender guilt, or deciding on sentences? Explain your answer.

Scenario #2 — As a police officer, your sergeant informs you that a number of adult males have been the victim of pickpockets. The crimes are occurring on Main Street during nonbusiness hours.

Based on your newly acquired knowledge of routine activities theory, what steps might you take to resolve the problem? *Owens et al. (2019)
