Global movement

Global movement

Description
Prompt: The LGBT movement is often referred to as a global movement whereby individual state level
movements share information, adopt frames, and utilize tactics adopted by other state level LGBT
movements. Although many state level movements have arguably been shaped by the experience of the US
LGBT movement, it should be pointed out that some non-US movements have been more politically
successful than the US movement in terms of adopting their desired policy goals, while other state level
movements have been less politically successful in achieving their desired policy goals. Using your
knowledge of social movements, compare the US LGBT movement with ONE state level movement
included in The Lesbian and Gay Movement and the State and/or The Politics of Gay Marriage in Latin
America (both are available on electronic reserve), highlighting which movement is “more successful” and
which is “less successful”. Which factors BEST EXPLAIN the difference in political success between the
US and your selected movement?
To address this question, your paper must do the following:
1) Briefly detail the “successes” or “failures” of the LGBT movement on the seven key issues in
your selected case (i.e., hate crimes, sodomy laws, adoption, military service, same sex
marriage, employment anti-discrimination laws, and gender identity protections) and in the US
movement (i.e., Which issues have been resolved and which have not?)
2) Compare and contrast the failure/success of the LGBT movement in your case with the LGBT
movement in the United States (i.e., Identify which movement is ‘more successful’).
3) Utilize course readings to explain why the LGBT movement in your selected case has been
more (or less) than in the United States (i.e., Poor resource mobilization? Lack of political
opportunities? Postmateralism/framing issues? Low visibility? Something else?).
4) Use course readings to support a well organized argument about which factors BEST
EXPLAIN the difference in political success across the two movements.
NOTE: Reading the chapter on your selected case in the texts listed above will be particularly
relevant for section one and the Wikipedia link on LGBT success in your selected case (which can
be accessed at: https://bit.ly/2ToITvn) should be particularly important for section two. Sections
three and four can draw on all relevant concepts covered this quarter, so use material covered during
the first half of the course as needed. While you should not neglect sections one and two, the
focus of the paper should be focused on the analysis in sections three and four.
Requirements: The paper should provide a well-organized argument to the prompt, using course materials
to substantiate your argument. There is a handout on the course which can assist with the appropriate
formatting of a social science paper. Please keep in mind that papers which do not 1) have an identifiable
thesis statement and/or 2) show no familiarity with course readings will be penalized. While you may
use any reputable news sources that you desire to address this question, you do not need to use additional
outside materials (either current events or theoretical) to complete this assignment. Please be advised that
your paper should not merely summarize the readings or rely completely on course lecture slides, but
should use these materials to substantiate your own cohesive argument. The paper should be 6-8 pages in
length (typed, double-spaced, with one inch margins), and should contain a bibliography. You may
use either MLA or APA format to cite sources within your paper.
