The concept statement or concept design is usually based around a phrase or wording that summarizes how the director “sees” the show. As an example: Clowns discovering the meaning of life.
Ideas conveyed are both ideas that are initially brought up by the playwright and ideas that the director may pull from the story that s/he would like to highlight with their storytelling. Some directors are very true to the script and some take more liberties with their storytelling.
A director should convey these ideas to make it a clearer, cleaner story. It can be done using the different elements that we have discussed this semester. These elements can be: style, size, form, color, etc. and used throughout the designs and choices made by the director to clarify the story. Sometimes the ideas are straightforward and unified, sometimes they are more creative. Our recent viewing of Death of a Salesman highlighted a dark,1940s world that seemed realistic inside the home, but altered and more stylized when we left the Loman household.
Sometimes to convey their ideas to others, a director may use: paintings or photographs, color palettes, etc. to reference the style of the production.
Images often will help people (the design team) understand what a director might be going for with their idea. As my example stated earlier, it was about clowns. However, it could be taken as: scary clowns, satirical clowns poking fun at politics, or birthday clowns. Images help clarify your ideas.
Please read the short absurdist play Come and Go by Samuel Beckett and decide on a conceptual design that might work for the play to help tell the story. Defend your ideas and let me know HOW you will convey these ideas for the “performance”.
