ARGUMENT ESSAY – 1200 Words – 20% of overall grade

Cite at least three secondary sources in addition to the primary source.

Look at the primary assertion made by one of the articles on the “Argument Essay Worksheet” found under “Journals” on Canvas and agree with it or refute it.

Your thesis must be supported with at least three academic sources. These sources must include journal articles and books (not general encyclopedias).

Absolutely no internet sources, including Wikipedia, or abstracts or book reviews are allowed.

All of the sources must be correctly cited in the essay and on the works cited page, using MLA 8 format.

The essay, like all other well-written essays, must have an introduction, a well-developed body, and a conclusion that is well-balanced.

  • The essay is to address a general audience.
  • In the introduction, introduce the general topic, mention the author’s name and the title of the primary source, and give a very brief, one to two sentence, summary of the article and the author’s thesis, and, of course, your own thesis.
  • Each supporting paragraph must be well-developed, using pertinent examples and thorough explanations.
  • You must have at least one counter-argument that you refute with specific evidence.
  • Videos are posted on “Pages” that will help.

Use the handbook in the back of your textbook (not your e-text), an MLA 8 handbook, The Writer’s Reference, or the videos posted under “Pages” on Canvas for MLA 8 citations. The writing center or the embedded librarian on Canvas (look on the “Discussions” page) is a good place to ask for help.

  • Integrate the quotes. No dropped quotes.

  • If the required sources are not used (the primary source and three secondary sources), minus ten points of overall essay grade for each required source that is not used.
  • Plagiarized papers are not acceptable.
  • PROOFREAD! CORRECT ALL BASIC WRITING ERRORS.

DUE DATE:
