Students should examine from the assigned readings (except for the poems), the meaning of symbols, and how they are effectively utilized. Symbols are the manifestations of “something that represents something else,” and are used in literature for a variety of reasons. For example, if focusing on either Thomas Jefferson’s essays, George Washington or Henry David Thoreau’s Battle of the Ants write an essay discussing how the symbols these authors used enhance various aspects of the story. The use of symbols in literature is both specific and deliberate; in addition, since the assigned readings are so well-written, consider how the use of symbols assist the reader to better understand the characters, the setting, the situation, the context, and the theme(s) of a story.5) The Character of George Washington – Thomas Jefferson

The requirements for Essay#1 are as follows:
- Six full pages in length
- This essay must be persuasive in nature
- It must use a sufficient number of textual examples–quotations followed by explanation and interpretation–as argumentative support
- Adhere to MLA standards and guidelines
- Contain at least four outside sources (within five years)
- Works Cited page
