Speech outlines are to be a guide, to help you organize your speech, but it’s not set in stone. You may use the outline as your aid during the presentation, but you are not limited to its use—you may use note cards if desired. Outline your speech—order your key points. This can be done chronologically or in order of importance. Make sure your information flows—in a sequence that makes sense to both you and the audience.

You should use a standard outline format, like this example: Sample Speech Outline.docx Download Sample Speech Outline.docx

Do NOT write your speech out word-for-word! As you give your speech, be aware that too much ad-libbing will cause you to lose focus, lose your place and likely lose your audience, so stick to your plan—that’s why you have an outline!
