Assignment 5: Read Chapter 8 – Supporting Ideas and Building Arguments

This chapter talks about how to support ideas and build arguments, it also talks about the four aspects of effective sources (accuracy, authority, currency, and objectivity). Read chapter 8 and respond to the following:

Find an article online about a topic on which you are interested in speaking. Examine it for the four aspects of effective sources (e.g., accuracy, authority, currency, and objectivity). Do you think this source is credible? Why?

Accuracy comes from data/facts which are backed up by proven evidence.

Authority comes from being an expert in the topic, or have personal experience, and/or the use of proven facts. As stated in the book, “use support in building your credibility is to cite authoritative sources—those who are experts on the topic.”

Currency shows how current the evidence is and the different points of view/perspectives of understanding the topic.

Objectivity is shown where the personal bias, and opinions are replaced by facts/evidence, and perhaps a counter argument, which is reasoned out with the claim/thesis, reason for the claim, and the evidence to support the claim and/or reasons. As stated in the text, “when examining support is whether the person or organization behind the information is objective or biased.”
