Definitions
Policy: set of ideas or plans used to make decisions
Examples: Pro-business policy, pro-property rights policy, environmental policy
Law: system of rules created by a community to help regulate community members’ actions.
Violation of rules results in punishment (fines, jail time, loss of privileges)
Examples: Clean Water Act Safe Drinking Water Act, Oil Pollution Act, Endangered
Species Act
Rule: specific guideline, standard, limit created to help support and implement a law. Often are
written with specific fines and punishments for violators of the rule
Examples: Clean Air Act Mercury Rule
