Your Midterm Exam is an essay.

Review The Clues to a Good Story.   Choose 3 of Andrew Stanton’s clues to a good story and then pick a story you love. In an essay of 500 words show how the story you love fulfills those qualities. (These must be positive characteristics Stanton mentions. Just saying in my chosen story, “there’s no love song, no happy village, no I want moment” will not qualify!)

1. Your Introduction (first paragraph) will include the title, author, and medium (book, movie, television episode) along with the author’s or director’s name. Your selection must be a story; do not select a song.   In your intro include a very brief statement of the type of story (drama, comedy, romantic comedy, mystery, etc.) and a two or three-sentence summary of the plot. With that summary include the name of the main character.

Do not give a detailed summary here! (Example: You’ve Got Mail  is a romantic comedy in which a young woman Kathleen Kelly loses her business, a beloved children’s bookshop inherited from her mother, because Fox Books, owned by Joe Fox, a huge discount bookseller has opened a chic huge store around the corner from her store. Unbeknownst to both Kelly and Fox, the two of them have met anonymously online in a chat room and are becoming dear friends and soul mates in the cyber world who have agreed to share no personal details including their names. In the real world, they are arch enemies.

2. Your thesis statement near the end of the first paragraph will include the 3 elements from Stanton’s Ted Talk. You’ve Got Mail is a great story for many reasons but it is particularly successful because it _____________, __________________. and _______________ articulated by Andrew Stanton in his Ted Talk giving the clues to a good story.

3. In the body of your paper – using correct paragraph form you will explain with specific examples how the story meets these requirements.

4. Then you will write a conclusion that ties everything together and restates/rephrases your thesis statement.

5. Next step –Proofread.
