This week has not been as crazy as last week, we went to see several patients, and most of the patients were bedbound, but they had a good family support system. We had a 92-year-old woman who is considered ”active” which is when your health declines and you don’t have much longer to live. This patient’s daughter and granddaughter expressed how emotional this has been for them, and we stayed with the family for a while to comfort them. This was sad, but with my experience working in the medical field for 15 years, I’ve watched several patients sulfur from their illness, and none of them were on hospice, so the main focus for this patient was to keep her comfortable as possible while going through the ”active” process. The patient family stated that the patient was in pain and not sleeping and that she stayed up for 25 hours, so we reached out to the nurse, and they are getting meds to help this patient sleep and increasing the dose of the pain medication. We went to see another ”active” patient she is a 94-year-old woman, and her son came in from out of town, and he did not understand how hospice worked. He kept his mom up and active for 9 hours, and she was so exhausted my field instructor had to educate the family on how hospice works and how his mom’s health was declining and also explained why she was so tired, but now he has a better understanding about everything with hospice works. The patient has already told her family what her wishes were and what she wanted as far as funeral arrangements. We had already educated the daughter on how hospice worked two weeks ago, but apparently, the son was unaware.
