Problem Statement and Research Questions

Assignment # 2: Problem Statement and Research Questions(objectives 1,2,3,4,5,6)For this assignment, students are invited to identify and articulate a problem facing those in their field or to identify a gap in the existing literature.  A problem statement starts off with a broad issue and then, step by step, guides the reader to the purpose of the study and to his/or her research questions and study objectives.  To prepare you for this assignment, the instructor will present several good problem statements and then the class will discuss in depth the elements that make for a quality statement. Students will turn in problem statement assignments to the instructor and feedback will be provided.  Students may then use this feedback to revise and resubmit as part of the larger research proposal due at the end of the semester. This assignment will be worth 10% of the student’s overall grade.

Assignment # 3: Literature Review and Theoretical/Conceptual Framework(objectives 1,2,4,7)Being knowledgeable and current with regard to research in one’s field is an important part of being a well-rounded practitioner.  Therefore, it is not only necessary to be able to read and understand one study in silo, but also to be able to see how that bit of information contributes to the larger body of knowledge that informs how and why we practice.  For this assignment, students will sift through databases to cull out studies that inform their own proposal.  Then, they will group them together in an organized and logical fashion to build a literature review. Additionally, good research is often guided by a theoretical or conceptual framework.  The framework serves to expose the researcher’s perspective or lens with which they are approaching their work. Used appropriately, a theoretical or conceptual framework will set the stage for the study and will inform not only the researcher’s problem statement, but also their methods/methodology as well as their discussion. To prepare you for this assignment, the instructor will present several good examples of quality literature reviews and theoretical/conceptual frameworks for class discussion. Students will submit literature review assignments (complete with a theoretical or conceptual framework) to the instructor and she will provide extensive feedback.  Students are free to use this feedback to revise and resubmit as part of the larger research proposal due at the end of the semester. This assignment will be worth 10% of the student’s overall grade.

Assignment # 4: Methodology and Methods

Foundations of Educational Research SyllabusEDF 6480 A.M. Students will submit their methodology and methods assignment to the instructor and she will provide feedback.  Students are free to use this feedback to revise and resubmit as part of the larger research proposal due at the end of the semester.  This assignment will be worth 10% of the student’s overall grade.

Assignment # 5: Final Research Proposal  (objectives 1-10)To demonstrate learned material over the course of the semester, students will be invited to submit a final research proposal.  The components of the research proposal will include: a) an APA formatted title page b) introduction c) problem statement d) purpose statement and research questions e) literature review complete with a theoretical or conceptual framework f) methods and methodology and g) conclusions and applicability to the field.  Students are encouraged to use feedback from earlier assignments to strengthen their final proposal.  Final research proposal guidelines will be handed out in class. Grades will reflect the quality of both the written proposal and oral presentations portions of the assignment.
