Do you see the connections to the notions of “otherness” and “power imbalance” discussed

After CAREFULLY reading (and re-reading) George Yancy’s letter to white America, please post on what this means to you. Do you see the connections to the notions of “otherness” and “power imbalance” discussed in the Notes for this week? Please address these notions as well as the material in Yancy’s letter. Especially in light of the incredibly important events this summer related to the death of George Floyd and the BLM movement, how can we address racism at its root? How can we truly address privilege and inequity in our culture? It is so deeply rooted, but surely not able to be eradicated.

If you are a person of color and are female, this letter is still speaking to ways in which you hold privilege that others do not have. Are you able bodied? Educated? Have a place to live? Have good health? A job? People in your life that love you? Are you mentally alert and able? There are many ways in which basic differences between people create imbalances of power, a sense of otherness, and privilege.

Yancy’s letter is an invitation to dive deeply into what privilege is and the beginnings of a conversation on how to ameliorate it. This is an important foundation of change for the world’s problems that affect all of us. Please DIVE DEEP with this material and think 3 times before you post. Beware of the pitfalls Yancy presents us with: the defensive ways in which we claim our innocence. And, as he points out, this is not about guilt tripping, it’s about LOVE and, therefore, healing.
