From this week’s reading, I find that McDermot’s arguments between leadership manipulation and collective mobilization are quite interesting. McDermot finds that leaders and followers can benefit from a mutual understanding from their relationship. For example, he states “at least in the modern world, leaders can be successful at cultivating followers without necessarily being particularly good at implementing policies that benefit those constituencies.” (McDermont 1) For a successful group to be able to mobilize its followers towards a common goal, they must involve some other variables besides the imposition of coercive force, the mere provision of material benefits, and most importantly the ability to remain in power. For example, McDermot states that “environmental factors matter because modern large-scale politics make it very difficult for followers to know what leaders are doing, much less hold them accountable for their behavior, since leader have more opportunity to manipulate and deceive followers for their benefit than would have been the case in small-scale political environments.” (McDermont 1) One of the key findings within the arguments is that leader strives to manipulate the emotion. After all, they can be used effectively to shape operations and construction in social and political identity. Overall, the emotional operation “can help us to regulate sensation-seeking or approaching and avoidance response to achieve and maintain an optimal state of arousal” (McDermont 4)
