Pick a poem from the two files on Blackboard for this week, poems and poems2.

Hope you are doing well! This week we would like to do our best job on a third essay on poetry

1 Pick a poem from the two files on Blackboard for this week, poems and poems2. These are popular poems and include where they were located and you may find them in other places as well. They have been written about and if you use some other source of information to help you along then please list it in the work cited list at the end and make sure you use citations for the evidence that you may mention as well as using lines and words from the poem,

2 Here is an outline of what can be done for Essay #3:

Introduction

Extra material such as author’s other poetry or reputation or background?

Thesis: ……to study this poem using its language, structure and meaning. (the thesis will follow what is in the body of the essay)

Body Paragraphs

With quotes, evidence (yes, sometimes the quote can be a single word or phrase) With all that can be said about a poem, this essay may include 6 body paragraphs based on all that you might say)

Language

Images, metaphor, similes, word choice, types of vocabulary, use of senses, descriptive qualities

Structure

Rhyme, rhythm, divisions or organizations of lines and stanzas, number of stanzas and number of lines etc., internal rhymes in a line

Meaning

Literal and especially interpretive, what gives you this meaning, what is unusual about the meaning

Conclusion

Restated thesis and general information as to those who would like the poem or other poems written by this author etc. and a general ending

3 Read all the poems because these (along with your last two short stories and the other three poems which you read, “Invictus” and Frost’s two poems will become the basis of next week’s questions. Do you remember what came to you in Blackboard folders on how to read a poem and are you doing that? Did you see how “Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening” can be reviewed. Did you look at the list of language which is different for poetry? These are all there for you to think about. Of course, you can always find articles on these poems and if you do quote and credit them for the information!

4 This essay will be due next Monday, October 19. It should include an outline (filling and adding on to what was given to you here) and it would be great if you could include one outside article of information in this essay!
