What are the main advantages of using a network-based approach to project management rather
than a Gantt chart?
The benefits of utilizing a network-based procedure, instead of a Gantt Chart, is that the network-based
diagrams display the arrangement and sequence of the items that are the focus of discussion. The
completion of one- leg objectives, are required but can’t be done until the overall project is accomplished.
It is imperative that the project administration is solid in their management of time, finances, and the
details of the project to be completed as generally there are more than one project in the planning and
development phases at any given time. They need to project each phase, complete the steps for each
project and meet all deadlines; otherwise one or more project might fail in their projected outcomes.
Under what circumstances might a Gantt chart be preferable to a network-based approach?
Because of the simplification, of each project, displaying the starting and ending points of each task as a
standalone activity; the Gantt chart would be a better chart to use than the network-based approach in my
department’s daily task regimen. As a ramp operation manager at The San Francisco International
Airport, I use Gantt charts for planning, budget operations, and in the planning of daily manpower needs
of the arriving flights. It gives me a clear visual picture of the flight arrivals and departures, and what
manpower will be necessary to get the lists of tasks accomplished- by the most efficient means.
