One reading reflection and another need to write : What characteristics do you think are the most critical for a teacher to be successful in reaching students in a multicultural environment?
first the reading reflection: Both articles this week begin to address how educators create multi culturally inclusive classrooms. What stands out to you from the articles as particularly insightful, important, or confusing? Why do the themes you chose resonate with you? What impact do you think that teachers with the characteristics would have on student learning outcomes?
Then a short write discussion: In 2015, the National Education Association (NEA) defined diversity in education as, the “total of the ways in which individuals are both alike and different.” They further provide many dimensions of diversity: gender, race, ethnicity, language, culture, religion, sexual orientation, class, mental and physical ability, and immigration status. The NEA recommendation was that multicultural education classes should be give learners opportunities to think critically about diversity and culture in a manner that reflects on their own experiences. Students should be assisted to “understand themselves as cultural beings [in order to] help them examine their beliefs and whether their beliefs are based in absolute truth or cultural norms.” Only then can they focus on becoming truly multiculturally-sensitive educators.
It is clear that much of what educators do and say, even how they think, is influenced by their own cultural frames, so it is important for a teacher to understand oneself before trying to create bridges across cultures. For this discussion post, please describe a teacher (or other educator like a coach or principal) you have had or witnessed that did a good job of communicating across cultural boundaries. What characteristics made this person (or their practice) stand out? What characteristics do you think are the most critical for a teacher to be successful in reaching students in a multicultural environment?
