Egoism

Egoism

Egoism is when a person looks out for one’s own self-interest as a basis of morality. The bible does speak about a person with those characteristics being ungodly and going against God’s word. The human nature of a person tends to do things based on if that thing will be in their favor regardless of the outcome for others. In the Book of Daniel, it speaks about King Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, who was a manipulator and wanted to have complete control over all the people by instilling fear in them. He did what ever he wanted as long it was for his own self-interest. Although he had these characteristics, he was also considered a genius and great commander and he was attentive whenever Daniel spoke of prophecies. Nebuchadnezzar brought in other men to decipher a dream that he had not knowing that it was God who was trying to communicate with him. Because Babylon was a kingdom that was dark and often mysterious, God wanted Nebuchadnezzar to realize that God was in control and not him. God’s rules and laws needed to be visited and change the system to treat the people better and stop his sinning ways. God eventually put him out for seven years before Nebuchadnezzar realized and looked up to the Lord again. In the end the King of Babylon had the spirit of the Lord in his heart once again and the true repentance was finally revealed. The Holy Bible says “Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase” (Daniel 4:37, King James Version).
