The goal of Interaction Analysis Paper

The goal of Interaction Analysis Paper (Part 1) is to get you started working on the Interaction Analysis Paper project and to help you organize you analysis paper (Part 2). To do so, you will first need to know what this interaction analysis paper is about and what you are expected to do for this paper project (see the details here Interaction Analysis Paper._Part 2.docx). Simply put, you will need to analyze a real-life interaction in which multiple and competing identity goals are found. You will analyze this interaction with a focus on one particular speaker’s communication dilemma by describing her or his identity goals and discourse practices used to manage this dilemma.

The interaction you are going to analyze can be found here 14 year old Parker stands up for his rights. Cops say he is free to go with his dad, instead of mom

The transcript of this recorded interaction can be found here 14+year+old+stands+up+for+his+rights+and+informed+choice+to+live+with+his+dad.doc

For Interaction Analysis Paper Part 1, what you need to do is:

1) Watch the youtube video clip (72 mins) about the “14-year old stands up for his rights and informed choice to live with his dad” and read through the transcript multiple times to notice and label the discourse practices participants used during the interaction.

2) Select one participant and focus on what discourse practices seem to indicate his/her identities. Look for patterns (speech features that are repeated multiple times) of discourse practices that indicate two identities that seem to be in tension with each other (and thus creating a communicative dilemma for this participant). Come up with a name for each identity that best represents what you see (they do not have to be different identity types (e.g., both of your identities can be about interactional identities or personal identities) to show a communicative dilemma). Identities that are implicit and constructed through the discourse practices are more analytically interesting than identities that are explicitly claimed in the conversation.

3) Based on what you noticed (both from the video and the transcript), you need to answer the questions in the Interactional Analysis Paper_Part 1-1.docx. You can just follow the prompts in this assignment and type your response under each question. You can use bullet points for some question, but for the last two questions, you have to write full sentences that clearly explain your answers.

4) Submit your responses in a Word document to Canvas. (You can use this as your outline for Interaction Analysis Paper Part 2 which is due on August 8th)
