(CSO 3.2) REMINDER-THIS ASSIGNMENT IS DUE FRIDAY AT MIDNIGHT

In this assignment, you will be reviewing a Christian education curriculum and providing a critical critique of the framework, lessons and content. You will be using your textbooks and the attached curriculum evaluation tool to identify strengths and weaknesses of the curriculum and providing a report. The focus for this review is for preschool aged children 3-6 years of age. The environment can be either home based learning or group based learning (like in a ministry program at a church).

Step 1: Review the Curriculum linked below “Dig-In”. It is a website that provides a lot of detail about its framework, lessons and content. You will need to spend some time exploring. It is suggested that you start with the “Try Free Demo” button as it allows you to tailor your search for your particular situation. When you click on the demo button it allows you to choose from 5 areas, I suggest you explore all 5. When you choose an area and then click on “class format” it allows you to choose “age grouping”. From here it bring you right to sample lesson plans. When you click on download you have to put in your name and bit of information and then in just a few seconds it provides you with a sample lesson that is very detailed. This is one small section of the site. Take the time to really familiarize yourself with the content before you move to step 2.

Step 2: Review the Evaluation Tool that is attached to this assignment. It is meant to be used as a guide to help you evaluate the content of the curriculum. You do not need to “complete” it and include it in your report, but you will want to use it as a tool to help guide you through Step 3.

Step 3: Using the evaluation tool and your textbooks (and other articles throughout this course), identify 4 elements of this curriculum that represent best practice in children’s faith formation. These elements may include: a developmental theory that supports age appropriate lessons, racial awareness components of the framework, inclusion throughout the curriculum, the role of play in spiritual formation, emphasis on self idenity, or the teachers/parents role in faith formation. These are just a few of many elements that might stand out to you. Share these elements and explain why you chose them by connecting them to concepts learned in this class. Be specific.

Step 4: Using the evaluation tool and your textbooks (and other articles throughout this course), identify 2 areas where this curriculum falls short. In your opinion, what is missing or needs more attention in creating best practices? Share these areas and explain why you chose them by connecting them to concepts learned in this class.

Your submission:

You should have a title page and introductory paragraph that provides a brief statement of the importance of evaluating Christian education programs for quality. The body of your paper will be at least 4 pages long. For your conclusion (one paragraph) share your reflection of this experience. Share how you might view this process differently now having gone through it. It will be expected that you will be using in-text citations throughout as well as providing a reference page at the end, all in APA format. Papers without citations/references will be sent back for revision. This assignment is worth 150 points.
