Research what Homeland Security is and the different ways that I can get involved to help make a stronger homeland

Post 1: Mary

For this week’s discussion I decided to research what Homeland Security is and the different ways that I can get involved to help make a stronger homeland. The Department of Homeland Security works to improve the security of the United States. The Department’s work includes customs, border, and immigration enforcement, emergency response to natural and manmade disasters, antiterrorism work, and cybersecurity (USA.gov, n.d.). The overall mission of homeland security is to ensure a homeland that is safe, secure, and resilient against terrorism and other hazards. This is an extremely important matter and something I feel every citizen of the U.S. should be aware of and educated on.

On the Department of Homeland Security website, there’s a “get involved” section which lists several different way citizens can get involved with homeland security. One that stood out to me the most was the one titled Citizen Corps. The mission of Citizen Corps is to harness the power of every individual through education, training, and volunteer service to make communities safer, stronger, and better prepared to respond to the threats of terrorism, crime, public health issues, and disasters of all kinds (DHS, 2017). This is one way that I would like to get involved with homeland security. This type of training and education on these certain matters is critical to the overall safety of our homeland.

I think one way I can get involved in homeland security is to follow the motto ‘If you see something, say something.’ I believe that phrase is so important to live by, especially in this day and age when there is always something happening everyday on T.V. It can start within the neighborhood such as learning everyday habits of your neighbors; not necessarily stalking them but noticing your surrounding and those within it. Looking out for out of place cars that seem to be constantly passing by every couple of minutes or parked on a side street for long periods at a time. Going beyond the neighborhood and learning different habits of the people you work with and when they start being odd behavior just taking note of it, asking how they might be doing and just keeping an out if you feel their behavior might become a problem within the workplace. Even when you are doing everyday errands and you may be at a store or bank and you notice someone seems nervous or is pacing back and forth, there might be a situation going that can criminal. People leaving bags or suitcases down in crowded areas where there are a lot of people. It’s the little things in noticing people’s behavior’s and common nervous ticks that can help you be aware and diligent.

‘The Florida Department of Health is responsible for protecting the public health and safety of the residents and visitors of the state of Florida.’ (Wikipedia, n.d). Generally speaking, the state health department can usually be found positioned in a median location (such as the capitol of the state). One major responsibility of the state is that it provides licensure to our healthcare workforce. Some other duties that also can fall under this specific agency include: affirmation of service proficiency, dispersal of state and federal funds to local agencies, and sustaining an array of data (i.e: lab services, birth/death records, injuries, hospital admittance, infectious disease, etc).

Local health departments serve smaller jurisdictions within the state and can be exceptionally favorable for communities. ‘Local health departments are city, county, metropolitan, district, and tribal government agencies.’ (‘NACCHO’, 2015). Most of these facilities seem to have the same focus/mission: ‘Prevent, Promote, Protect’.

One way a local health department prevents is aiding in defense against the start and spread of contagious diseases/outbreaks. They do this by working closely with partners and healthcare associates within the community, which ultimately can make an outbreak situation easier to target, as well as configuring a well-suited response/treatment for it.

When it comes to promoting, a local health department focuses on not only encouraging healthy lifestyles but also providing access to quality health care services for cheaper (i.e: immunizations, prenatal, dental, etc).

Lastly, the local health department assists in protecting the community by maintaining protocols that strongly encourage a healthier community overall (i.e: smoke-free environments, nutritional school lunches, exercise programs, etc).

As stated in Basics of the U.S. Health Care System, the state health departments are in charge of various duties; some of which include: primary advocacy for community healthcare in every county, implementation of federally mandated acts such as the Clean Water Act & Clean Air Act and reporting of statistics of community health for further research and knowledge about the nation’s overall health. The state is also important in licensing those who wish to become licensed in their field of health. This maintains a great deal of importance because the state makes sure the folks who will be in the workforce are prepared to take on conditions in their field. States are also in charge of making sure the hospitals and other medical facilities are in standard with cleanliness and safety (Niles, 2018, P. 98).

Local health departments are also essential to the well-being of the state’s communities. Without local health departments, there would not be direct care from the federal and state government to look closer at what our communal issues are. According to Niles, over 90% of health departments offer the immunizations for adults and children; in addition, that same percentage includes the monitoring of infectious diseases to prevent outbreaks (P. 98).

The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), is an association that stands behind local health departments. They provide eligibility for grants and access to databases and discounted rates that otherwise, would not be affordable to non-member local departments (“Membership,” 2018).

I chose to research Publix for this assignment. I recently gave them a bunch of my money for products and wanted to see where my money was really going to. =P

Here is the link to the information:

https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/viewer?action=view&cik…#

The acid test formula is (Cash + Accounts Receivable + Short-term Investments) / Current Liabilities.

Total cash for 2017 was $579,925. Short term investments were $915,579. Total accounts receivable were $4,084,921 Current liabilities were $1,754,706

All that equals 3.18 which is very good! I know everyone expects Publix to have a strong turnout and it is no news that this number is this high.

To calculate the accounts receivable turnover ratio I simply took the net sales from 2017 which were $34,558,286 and divided it by the average accounts receivable which was $2,042,460

The accounts receivable turnover ratio came out to 16.92 (rounded)

This means that Publix collects its receivables 16.92 times on average per year. This number also serves as an indicator of the number of accounts receivable Publix collects during a year.

The name of the company I chose is Starbucks. I got my financial reports from https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/viewer?action=view&cik…. I am interested in this company because I am a frequent customer at Starbucks and am drinking a Starbucks drink while completing this assignment. To calculate acid-test ratio you follow the formula (cash including cash equivalents + short-term investments + net current receivables)/total current liabilities. Using the Starbucks information I did (2,462.3 + 228.6 + 870.4)/4,220.7. The final acid test ratio for Starbucks is 0.84. To find account receivable turnover ratio I followed the formula net credit sales/average net accounts receivable. Following this formula, I did 2,884.9/96.8. The final accounts receivable turnover ratio is 29.80. From this, I learned that the acid test ratio for Starbucks is not ideal. The ratio for Starbucks is only 0.84 while a safe ratio is 1.00. This means that Starbucks only has $0.84 of asses to pay each dollar of current liabilities. This means they do not have enough assets. With regards to accounts receivable turnover ratio, I learned Starbucks turns over its receivables 29.8 times a year. This seems very high to me but while I was doing calculations I struggled to find the net accounts receivable so I am not sure if I plugged in the correct numbers.

In the body, deoxygenated blood from the diaphragm down enters the inferior vena cava. Deoxyygenated blood from the upper part of the body and head enters the superior vena cava. These two join together and drain into the right atrium of the heart. This blood then passes through the tricuspid valve with the help of the chordae tendinae and papillary muscle into the right ventricle. From the right ventricle, it goes through the pulmonary valve into the pulmonary trunk where it is carried to the lungs to become oxygenated.

The now oxygen rich blood enters back into the left atria of the heart via the pulmonary veins. It is then pushed through the mitral or bicuspid valve into the left ventricle. From the left ventricle, it travels into the aorta via opening of the aortic valve. The process of it circulating from the heart, to the lungs and from the lungs back to the heart is called pulmonary circulation. Once the blood becomes oxygenated, it is following systemic circulation where it is now distributed to the rest of the body. To do this, it travels though the ascending aorta, arch of aorta, descending thoracic aorta, and abdominal aorta before it loops back around to the heart. This entire process is continuous and must be consistent.

So here it goes, as best as I can simplify it!

The human heart is a very intricate organ with lots of doors and hallways. All the blood in our body funnels through the right side of our heart through two main veins; if the blood comes from the bottom half of our body, it’s funneled through the inferior vena cava (SVC) and if it comes from the top half of our body, it comes through the superior vena cava (IVC). Either way, these veins empty out into a main hallway, called the right atrium. When the right atrium fills up, it contracts and pumps blood into the tricuspid valve and into the right ventricle. When the right ventricle contracts, blood is pumped through the pulmonary valve, into the pulmonary artery and into the lungs. This is a crucial part of the delivery system because the blood needs to fill up with oxygen before it is pumped back out to the body for use.

When blood returns from the lungs it funnels now through the pulmonary veins and goes to the left side of the heart, first through a portal called the left atrium. When this atrium contracts, it goes into the mitral valve and then it’s forced into the left ventricle. At this point the blood is pushed through this last chamber and up through the aortic valve, which flows the blood out to the whole body through the main artery called the aorta. It’s a particularly big job to pump so much blood up and against much higher pressure and circulation, so the aorta has thicker, tougher muscle than the other chambers.
