Building Renaming

5-7 pages

On June 17, UNC’s Board of Trustees voted to remove its ban on renaming campus buildings; that ban said that no buildings or monuments could be moved or renamed until 2031. Before then, Saunders Hall was renamed Carolina Hall. More recently, a campus commission recommended renaming four buildings (Aycock, Carr, Daniels, Ruffin); three of those names were removed. The Department of History has unofficially re-named Hamilton Hall as Pauli Murray Hall and attention has been focused on Morrison Dormitory.

Now, we can consider renaming. For your final project, you will propose a new name for one of these unnamed buildings. The new name should be the name of a person of significance to UNC, to North Carolina, or to the American south more broadly. That person can be significant because they made important, helpful changes or stood for something worthy (Dean Smith); because they were bad actors but were important (Bryan Grimes); because they are famous (Michael Jordan); or for another reason. Naturally, some of these reasons are better than others, but as long as you can persuasively and with evidence state your case, it’s really up to you to make the call.

Your paper should do a few things:

Identify which building you wish to rename and why. The why includes that the building is now unnamed because __________. This will involve doing some basic research about who the person was who had their name removed. Again: Aycock, Hamilton, Carr, Daniels … and also Ruffin and Morrison even though those names are still on there.

Make a statement of principle(s) that you think should guide any renaming process.

Explain how this re-naming expresses the values or principles you identified in #2.

Describe how the re-naming will take place. Will there be a ceremony of some kind? What will it look like? Who will attend?

The above is a framework. Following it will be handy but you do not need to follow it *exactly* to be successful. This should be a paper with a title, paragraphs, page numbers, etc. Use footnotes for your research materials.
