Informed Consent is permission granted in the knowledge of the possible consequences, typically that which is given by a patient to a doctor for treatment with full knowledge of the possible risks and benefits. the informed consent was disregarded in the Tuskegee experiment because the study was secret and conducted by the U.S. Public health Service. It studied the progression of the deadly disease -without treatment. Had the people of Tuskagee known the full details of the experiment they more then likely wouldn’t of participated especially when antibiotics were proven to cure the disease thus ending the experiment altogether.

DISCUSSION POST #2

Hello class,

In the matter of a study using human subjects, informed consent is the process of disclosing all aspects of what is being researched to the people involved. Essentially it is transparency of the who, what, where, when, and why of the study. This will allow the possible participants the ability to make a sound decision as to whether or not they want to partake in the research. The informed consent protects all parties involved in the study. It is important that participants understand that their participation in the research is completely voluntary and they can choose to not to participate or withdraw from the study at any time (Informed Consent in Research, n.d.).

The Tuskegee Syphilis Study was full of deception and a lack of regard for human life. Researchers offered free medical treatment for bad blood disease, meals, and burial insurance to poor black men living in rural Alabama. Bad blood disease was the term used for just about any kind of ailment ranging from something as simple as fatigue to syphilis. These men were not educated and essentially had no one to advocate for them. They blindly trusted these doctors and nurses who they perceived as knowledgeable and as authoritarian figures. The men freely participated in the study but they were never given proper informed consent. The subjects were recruited with misleading promises of free treatment that were actually painful spinal taps or heavy metals therapy (Heintzelman, 2003). Essentially the study was conducted to see how the syphilis disease progressed in a human from onset all the way until death. There was never any intent to cure these men as was noted when they were never given penicillin to cure their disease.

DISCUSSION POST #1

Hello class,

The study of environmental science is important to our everyday life because we need to be able to see what factors are damaging our earth and what factors we can help adjust to make our earth cleaner and more efficient. By studying the ocean and our air quality alone can affect our world so much. Studying how gas cars are damaging our air quality and electric cars are benefiting are to examples of this. According to the American Lung association, 4 in 10 Americans live with unhealthy air quality. With this information a study can be done to find out where the worst air quality is in America and focus on coming up with a plan to lower the damage.

Environment is the sum total of all the external forces, influences and conditions, which affect the life, nature, behavior, growth, development and maturation of living organisms ( Dahiya, P., and M. Ahlawat).

There are many companies in place that specialize in the elimination and processing of hazardous waste. On the other end there are companies in the past that have been identified as improperly dumping unknown hazardous waste. Evidence still show the effects of hazardous waste and how it becomes a toll. Flint, Michigan currently and Picher, Oklahoma prior to the 90’s are just two of many problems. These are all by products from large companies.

I attend a briefing of environmental protection there were many types of hazardous wastes covered from industrial to individual produced waste. An exercise that calculated my footprint, which I didn’t know was a thing. We create waste by not following proper steps, for example disposal of: antifreeze, large quantity of cooking or even motor oil, batteries and etc.

There are agencies and practices in place to help respond to hazardous spills. However we create potential situation that don’t immediately pose harm but over time becomes an issue.
