Explain and evaluate Elizabeth Anderson’s argument

Write a 3-4 page paper on the following prompt.

Explain and evaluate Elizabeth Anderson’s argument (https://www.vox.com/the-big-idea/2017/7/17/15973478/bosses-dictators-workplace-rights-free-markets-unions) for the claim that businesses are private governments that threaten our freedom, as she advances it in “How Bosses are (Literally) Like Dictators.” This prompt has two parts: (1) Explain in your own words as clearly as you can what her argument is, including substantial reference to at least one (but preferably more than one) of the resources she provides links to in her article. (2) Evaluate her argument. To do this you must not only state whether you agree with her conclusion, but also say why. If you disagree, show where her argument goes wrong. If you agree, imagine a possible objection to her view and respond to it.

Formatting: 3-4 pages, double-spaced, 12 point font, 1” margins. The body of the paper must be at least 3 pages; header and title do not count toward the total length.

Some Advice for Your Writing:

 Pretend you are writing for someone who is intelligent, inquisitive, and cares about the topic, but who hasn’t been studying the material we have in class. Don’t assume your reader knows the relevant facts, or the meaning of technical philosophical terms (e.g., “utilitarianism” or “Kantianism,” “intrinsic” or “instrumental” value, etc.). Explain them as simply and clearly as you can, so that they can have their proper force in your argument.  This is an argumentative paper, in which you are trying to argue for a thesis. Leave out anything that doesn’t contribute to that goal. Be ruthless about this. You may start your writing by putting down everything you think you know about the topic, but by the end you should have winnowed that down to only what is absolutely needed to make the point you want to make. If something is there just to take up space, leave it out. If it’s serving a direct purpose to your argument, leave it in.
