In contemporary society, we have been forced to re-examine offensive ideas that were considered cultural norms in other eras. For some, that means that we should abolish references to these offensive ideas or eliminate either the ideas or creators of these ideas, or both, from mainstream society. For example, Mark Twain was one of the most widely-read American authors until a few decades ago, when there was a call to remove his writings from many classrooms because of the racially charged language used in such novels as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Some disagree with this approach, arguing that removing these media disallow for nuanced conversation. Further, some attempt to decontextualize offensive works in order to use them for study. For example, the 2016 film Birth of a Nation chronicling the slave rebellion of Nat Turner acts as a response to the 1915 film of the same name that glorified the KKK.

The article about the history of race and Mardi Gras explores the problematic past of the tradition, but doesn’t necessarily argue whether the tradition should be kept or altered in some way.
