Instructions: Please choose one movie from the following list that we covered in class this semester, to complete this assignment.
For this assignment, you need to pick one or multiple things that interested you in the movie, it could be a character, scene or background culture that related to Chinese culture, then write a four-page thesis paper about your findings. You also need to provide evidence you find from the movie or real life to support your thesis statement. Be aware that this is not a film summary, the reader is the professor which means she also watched all of those movies above, so please don’t spend too much length on summarizing the story of the movie, focus on thesis statement.
Film list ( I also put some recommendation thesis after the title) :
– To Live (poverty and environmental of citizens in Chinese back in 1950s-1970s)
– The Road Home (free love movement in the late 20th century)
– Wedding Banquet (Family status and homosexuality in a traditional Chinese family)
– Almost a Love Story (culture conflict between Mainland and Hong Kong in late 20th century)
– Chungking Express (Wong Kar-wai style, modern view of Hong Kong.)
(I personally recommend The wedding Banquet or Chunking Express, and feel free to find out different thesis. )
Purpose: to cultivate the habits of critical thinking by making an argument and providing evidence
Focuses: Please discuss assigned texts and films
Content: you may analyze a specific character, scene or theme in a short story or a film
Length: 4 double-space pages
