In reviewing Chapter 10, person-centered therapy discusses the importance of trust in the group process, genuineness, empathy, and unconditional acceptance. There are many roles and functions of the group leader that are important to consider which allow a lot of room for creativity in the group process.
Carl Rogers daughter, Natalie, helped introduce expressive art therapy into the person-centered approach. Make sure you thoroughly review the various aspects and principles of expressive arts therapy discussed in chapter 10 before responding to this assignment as it identifies guidelines, challenges, conditions, and applications to consider.
For this assignment, you are going to incorporate expressive art therapy with a theme of anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion which is a focus of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
1) Group Members – Imagine you are working with several small groups of 8-10 high school students of mixed genders, ethnicities, and socioeconomic statuses. The groups would be psychoeducational groups focused on enhancing and promoting respect for all individuals, learning from various experiences/perspectives, and examining biases to help foster a sense of belonging and connectedness.
2) Expressive Art Therapy Group Activity – Research person-centered expressive art therapy and themes of anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion among adolescents. What type of activity could you either use or create based on your research that would be appropriate for this group? You may have to use ideas from several sources to come up with an activity or reshape an existing individual activity for a group activity.
3) Write Up Your Activity – Based on your research, document your findings in writing using APA format. – 30 points
- Make sure you have headers to clearly identify and clarify the different sections covered.
- Cite your information within your paper when you reference information you used from the text or other sources as I will be looking to see where you took the information learned and applied it to your activity.
- Your document should identify what the activity is, how it is appropriate for the theme and age group, and how the activity meets the guidelines/principles of person-centered expressive arts therapy.
