Explain the norm that you violated. 2) How did people react when you violated the norm? 3) How did it make you feel while you were violating

There is a concept known as social influence. Social influence can actually be broken down into informative influence (the person looks towards the group for information that the person may not know which of course influences their actions) and normative influence (the person is influenced by others to change their behavior so that they are not castigated or made fun of by the group). With regard to informative influence, if you were located in New York City and saw an entire group of people staring up at the sky we all would probably stop and stare up in the sky with the idea that the group may know something that we do not know.

With regard to normative influence, you might remember in high school you wanted to wear the right kind of sneakers or that you were afraid of being ridiculed. Another example of normative influence is wearing the proper attire at a wedding so that others will not look at us in a bad light.

For the extra credit assignment I would like you to violate a social norm (normative influence example) that is not against the law or could possibly get you into trouble so please use good discretion. It has to be done only with family and friends and not with strangers because I don’t want anyone to get into a difficult situation. For example, you can get into an elevator but instead of turning around when you enter the elevator stare at the wall instead. Another possibility is that you can eat dinner with your family but instead of using a fork and knife you use your hands. Obviously if you’re eating pizza that’s not a problem and it would be considered socially acceptable but if you are eating fish, pasta, or meatloaf for example, it would be inappropriate to eat it with your hands. Another possibility is to eat soup with your family or friends and instead of using a spoon, slurp it up the way a dog might do. These are just some examples that each student is welcome to use or come up with your own but please remember that you must do it only with friends and family so please do not do this at work, do not go to a store and steal something, etc.

DON’T FORGET TO STILL KEEP SOCIAL DISTANCE SINCE WE ARE IN THE MIDST OF A PANDEMIC
