This writing assignment is based on discussions about Kant’s Categorical Imperative in Chapter 6 of Introduction to Philosophy: Ethics.

In a short essay, discuss Kant’s “Categorical Imperative.” Explain why you take that principle to be acceptable or unacceptable by working with two of the issues he discussed:

Suicide

Borrowing money

Helping others in need

If you disagree with Kant on either of the cases you select, you should explain why you disagree. Try to keep the focus on what you take to be wrong about his reasoning.

If you agree with Kant on either of the cases you select, then you should try to defend his reasoning against an objection. Think about why someone might disagree with Kant’s approach, and answer that concern.

Your essay should include a short summary of how Kant addresses the cases you select before you go on to criticize or defend them.

Minimum length: 400 words.
