The research paper is an original essay in which each student will propose and defend a resolution to an ethical dilemma that arises in their major or chosen profession. This paper will draw on insights from a professional code of ethics and other outside research. The paper should demonstrate awareness of the nature of individual research within a scholarly context appropriate to genre and discipline. It will present persuasive and original reasoning in a justifiable, logical, and creative fashion that is within a scholarly context and presented and documented in a style that meets professional standards. The paper will be at least 15-20 pages in length
Presentation: Each student will develop a formal persuasive oral presentation to complement their research paper. The presentation will begin with the creation of a formal outline which transitions the content from a written to an oral communication format. This process includes presenting a topic appropriate to genre and discipline, developing a position/thesis in a systematic way through critically evaluating and selecting data/evidence that is organized into an argument that is clear, ordered, and scholarly in style and format. The student uses the formal outline to develop a speaking outline from which the student presents, as well as a slideshow which the student uses as part of the presentation. The conventions of public speaking must be required for this presentation, including the formal outline and slideshow submitted to Canvas for university assessment. In addition, the student must submit a video recording of the presentation to Canvas for assessment. The minimum presentation length is 10-12 minutes.
