Discussion: Research

Discussion: Research

Topic 1: Applied Research

Where do you see applied research in the broader spectrum of traditional, academic social science research? Identify and discuss at least three (3) examples where applied research has impacted your workplace or your community. For each example, address the following:

  • Describe the general details of each of the three examples.
  • Explain the ethical considerations that would need to be addressed were you to conduct a similar study for each of the three examples.
  • Identify a research hypothesis that was likely addressed for each of the three examples, providing the primary independent and dependent variables for each.

Topic 2: Identifying the Problem

Identifying your research problem is the first step in the process. During this week’s Discussion, post at least three different problems that could form the basis of an applied research study (not a traditional research study) in criminal justice.

Traditional research is designed to expand knowledge, while applied research is intended to document a problem for the purpose of identifying solutions. Applied research is conducted in a real-world criminal justice setting (e.g., a local law enforcement agency, court, prison, community center, jail, or probation office, etc.) as a result of a problem that is currently occurring in the site and which needs research and resolution. If you already work in the field where you would propose to do your research, you might identify a need in your own organization. If not, you should select topics related to your discipline, interests and important to your local community and/or state. This week, you do not need to spend too much time researching your ideas. The purpose of this Discussion is to brainstorm. Additionally, read through and comment on the ideas your classmates post. Remember to be constructive as you post your comments.
