This assignment will require you to do the assigned readings, reflect, answer questions, do some research in newspapers on a current even, and then apply the material to the current event. Your final product should be a 4 – 5 page properly written and cited essay that addresses all aspects of the questions. You will not be able to answer the questions satisfactorily if you do not do the readings.
1. Do the readings for Week 2.
2. Answer the following questions: What is democracy? Define it, and describe the different types. Why should we obey the state? What is representation? There are several thinkers in the reading, briefly summarize their views on representation.
3. Consider the following: If a government that claims to be democratic is also more representative of the people, are people more likely to obey it? Think carefully – it depends on how you construe representation. Discussions can get hyper specific however one person can be several different types of representative at the same time. Jesus Garcia, United States Congressman from the Illinois 4th District, is a Mexican American who symbolically as well as descriptively represents the many Latinos in his district for whom it was drawn. But he also has a lot of non-Latino support, which means he substantively represents those populations. Congressman Garcia’s immigrant experience and his alliance with Senator Bernie Sanders also make him a gyroscopic and surrogate representative for many. However we may say that the immigrant experience is a descriptive form of representation itself, no matter where one has emigrated from. And so on. The point is that this Congressman in many ways represents many people.
The criticism today is that many do not – they are rich, highly educated professionals (mostly lawyers) who do not understand the experience of the average person. Senator Sanders has referred to the US as trending towards oligarchy, and President Trump ran on a platform of “draining the swamp.” So I will pose the question a different way – do we need representatives that look and feel like us in order to represent us? Will it help maintain the legitimacy of government? Why or why not?
