Overview

Your term paper should be an original work and should present your assessment of the most important figure (real or literary), event, or development from the periods studied based on the impact of the selected figure, event, or development on today’s world.

All term papers must be submitted on Canvas on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020 by 11:59 p.m. EST.

Purpose

Your goal is to analyze the legacy of the cultures studied. Whether you decide to focus on history, literature, philosophy, art, some other aspect of our studies, or a combination of them, your paper should present an assessment, defend a position, or construct an argument about your chosen topic. Plot summary and simple assembly of facts are not the goals of the assignment; they should be used only as needed to document your views. Here are a few sample questions that could be starters for topic ideas:

Which literary works covered in class have most influenced today’s culture?

How would today’s world have been changed if a key event from the period covered (for example, a historic battle) had turned out differently?

How would our world change if a particular philosophical system were adopted by most people?

Please note that these are not suggested topics for you to write about; they are just examples of questions that might help you get started on thinking critically about the material that we cover. As an intellectual exercise and an integral part of the assignment, topic selection is your responsibility.

Description

Your paper should draw on at least five (5) secondary sources, all of them cited within the main body of your paper. (Note: a literary work covered in class, such as Beowulf, is an example of a primary source; a scholarly article or book that discusses Beowulf is an example of a secondary source.) Use appropriate, relevant, authoritative books and/or articles from credible, qualified authors. A dictionary (though you should use one) does not count as a secondary source, nor do print or online encyclopedias or textbooks. Student/sample essays, print or online study guides, open-content sources, and quotation banks also do not count as secondary sources, nor do chats, discussion threads, forums, blogs, etc. Images and audio/video works are fine to include in your paper, but generally, they are not secondary sources. Note that this is not an exhaustive list of inappropriate or unacceptable sources.

Your term paper should consist of about 2,300 words. This total refers to your own original content and excludes your list of works cited and direct quotations. All papers should be formatted according to the latest MLA style guide. Do not email me your paper.
