Help demonstrate your understanding of / ability to implement the UWP 1 Learning Outcomes as a
major component of your Final Portfolio. Especially relevant to this project is the Research learning
outcome; Rhetorical Knowledge is also a key component of this essay (i.e. how and why a group
uses certain genres or vocabularies, and how to situate your own ideas in a larger scholarly
conversation or discourse); and the other learning outcomes will be demonstrated here in their own
ways. You need to:
 Conduct primary research and secondary research.
 Identify a specific, locatable discourse community as the primary focus of your essay.
 Analyze the data you produce (through both primary and secondary research) in order to
form an interpretation of, or argument about, your discourse community’s communicative
styles and values—in other words, how does the concept of ‘discourse community’ help us
learn something interesting about this group? Or, how does studying this group as a
discourse community help us learn something interesting about communication, group
organization, genre, etc.?
How you fulfill these requirements and accomplish these goals is mostly up to you. I’m here to help
you develop your research skills, to help push your analytical and critical thinking further, to describe
to you what I see going on in your writing and revising processes and strategies, and to make
recommendations on how you can improve in these areas.
