My definition of health compares to that of WHO in that they both outline and state a view of health as more than just being okay physically. Both definitions are similar from the original view of health as the state of being disease-free (Pender et al., 2015). Currently, my definition of health is broad and very different than the WHO’s. I believe it is an individualized definition and depends on where you are at in your life and what is going on. At this time in my life, I am 41 years old, have two kids and a wife, work two jobs, go to school, exercise, help keep the house partially standing, and find some social time. This is my ideal picture of health. A very close friend of mine that is the same age has multiple sclerosis and is heavily reliant on an electric wheelchair. His definition of health changes daily. Is he able to get out of bed and take a few steps in pain or is he going to need his chair the rest of the day? He has been fortunate enough to work from home, continue a marriage, and still provide for his two children. He would tell you that he is as healthy as he can be right now at this stage in his life. An article by Card (2017) states that the absence of disease or disability is not necessary for someone to feel that they are in good health. My definition of health relies on life experience. I believe that positive attitude and mental health outweighs physical health most of the time.
