Beginning around 1900, the mass manufacture of products caused businesses to address customer quality concerns. The focus moved from manufacturing on a grand scale to products that delivered what was promised. Quality arose as a major function due to defects and non-conformities which had the effect of slowing production and increasing costs. Manufacturers saw the benefits of quality and began making products by adhering to specifications, driven by the consumer. This emphasis on quality played a pivotal role in World War II and gave the Allies a distinct advantage. Not only could war materials be produced at a quicker pace, but these materials be more reliable.

After the war, those individuals who developed these techniques were sent to Japan to rebuild their industrial base. Within 30 years, the Japanese went from producing inferior products to producing superior products – their economy expanded and trade with the rest of the world increased steadily. Those individuals are often called today the quality gurus as they changed the world with their philosophies and practices.
