Why do people in close relationships so often use negative forms of communication with each other?

For example, why would married couples express the four horsemen of the apocalypse? Would it seem more rational to express hostility to non-family members than to spouses or relatives?

If people are expressing so much hostility with strangers present (in the warning signs video), how might they act when no one is around?

When looking at all of the different styles of managing conflict, why do people seem to prefer compromise (which means someone has to give up something), when collaboration produces better overall outcomes?
