Read Choosing a Topic and then in this exploratory essay you will be writing to discover ideas, positions, and perspectives about an issue to understand the issue’s scope and to discover your own position in relation to the issue.

Choose one of the following topics and write down all the pro and con arguments you can think of in, say, ten minutes. Then, at least an hour or two later, return to your notes and see whether you can add to them. Finally, write a balanced dialogue between two imagined speakers who hold opposing views on the issue. You’ll doubtless have to revise your dialogue several times, and in revising your drafts, you’ll likely come up with further ideas. Present both sides as strongly as possible. (You may want to give the two speakers distinct characters, or personas.) After you have completed the exercise, write an exploratory essay in which you first identify the issue, then work through different perspectives, positions, ideas, and solutions related to your issue.
