Choose one of the following prompts and follow its instructions to fulfill your writing requirements for Unit I. Be sure to place the WORD COUNT at the end of your essay and response.
After completing your discussion essay, write a response to one of the essays of your fellow students. Note that you are to reply directly on the threaded discussions. To Complete your Unit I Response Assignment due the following week, copy your reply, save it as a PDF and submit it in the Unit I Response Assignment. In your Response, choose the answer to the prompt you did not answer with which you most agree or disagree. In addition to your comments about why you agree or disagree with the essay discussion, describe a precedent that was set by the actions or events discussed in the essay you chose. Does it affect us today? Reference the sources assigned in the essay in your response using MLA format and 250 to 350 words. Place the word count at the end of your response.
PROMPT 1:
As the Railroad, Indians, Cattlemen, Miners, and Farmers struggled to control the West they met many unanticipated challenges. Compare the efforts made by the cattlemen and the farmers to overcome these challenges and comment on which group was most effective. Use four of the primary sources from the end of Module 1,2 Instructor Commentary as well as two more primary sources of your choice and at least one secondary source of your choice. Include quotes and citations from your primary sources within your discussion to support your ideas. Be sure there is at least one in-text citation in or ending each paragraph. Explain using 650 to 750 words in MLA format. Be sure to place the word count at the end of your discussion essay and include a separate Works Cited.

Most of the nineteenth century’s “Titans of Business” were known as “Robber Barons” because of their ruthless business practices; however, some of them, whether for public relations or purely charitable reasons, donated large sums of money to various causes. Among these men are John D. Rockefeller, Henry Flagler, and Andrew Carnegie. Choose one of these individuals and outline their business success, their predatory business practices, any public criticism you can find, and their charitable contributions in Central Florida. Use 650 to 750 words in MLA format referencing 2 secondary sources and 3 primary sources including at least one newspaper article from the primary sources included at the end of Module 1,1. Be sure to include at least one in-text citation in each paragraph and include discuss, quote, and cite all sources used. Place the word count at the end of your Discussion essay and include a Separate Works Cited.
