The following are the two essay questions:

essay 1

How do art historians categorize the different subjects explored by artists? Why do artists work within specific subject categories?

Note: The subject categories we have been exploring in class include: landscape, history, portraiture, genre, and still life.

Essay 2

What are the different technical processes artists use to make art? Why do artists choose specific materials and tools to make works of art?Note: The terms “technical processes, “materials,” and “tools” used here refer to the techniques used by artists discussed in class, which include etching, ukiyo-e, mosaic, stone carving, wheel-thrown pottery, charcoal, encaustic, and oil painting, among others.

Carefully consider these guidelines

1. Do NOT do “outside” research to prepare to answer these questions. Instead, use the materials offered in class for the first three weeks: the chapters, documents, spotlight on technique videos, and readings.2. It is important that you think for yourself. Use independent thinking to interpret the works of art we have explored together in class, along with the voices of writers of our documents, the authors of our readings, and the people who have demonstrated different techniques in the videos. As you rely on these writers and artists, quote directly from the documents, videos, and readings, and if you rely on what I have written in the chapters, place “quotes” around that material, too, if you use it. You do not need to include footnotes when you quote our class material—just make it clear within your essay who you are quoting. As you construct responses for the essays, make thoughtful choices in what works of art you analyze, as well as which documents, videos, and readings you use to support your ideas.

3. Question: How long should each essay be? Answer: As long as you need it to be. There is no specific page length required, but this is your opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned in the first half of our class. As such, answer each essay thoroughly. Discuss works of art in detail. Aim to explore at least ten works of art discussed in class—possibly more—in each essay. And aim to explore at least four documents, in detail, possibly more. Aim to explore at least four of the spotlight on technique videos (possibly more) and at least four of the readings (possibly more). Keep in mind that the essays are graded separately, so you will be earning points for your discussion of art, documents, spotlight on technique videos, and readings in two separate essays.

4. Type and double-space your essays, using a 12-pt font, and save both as a single pdf or Word doc.

5. Upload your document with both essays to Canvas in the “Third Week (Part 2 of 2) module. Make sure you place your own name in the file name. If I was uploading my own midterm, I would name it as follows: E Mjelde Midterm 1A.pdf. Also, place your full name on the essays themselves.

Grading your essays

The following explains how I will grade each of your essays. Use this as a guide to writing your essays, keeping in mind how you will earn points:

a. Write about art discussed in class: 10 pts

Begin with choosing works of art (discussed in class) on which to base your response. Write about them in detail, relying to some degree on the analyses you have done on these works while filling out your chapter worksheets. In some cases, you may want to re-use some of the writing you have done in your discussion posts. You will be awarded up to 10 points for your analyses of works of art discussed in class.

b. Use documents, spotlight on technique videos, and readings discussed in class: 12 pts Support your analyses of works of art with our documents, spotlight on technique videos, and readings discussed in class. You will be awarded up to 4 points for the ways in which you use documents; 4 points for the ways in which you use spotlight on technique videos; and 4 points for the ways in which you use readings.

c. Communicate clearly and answer the question(s) completely: 8 pts

You will earn up to 4 points for clarity and up to 4 points for completeness
