2. The Role of the Nurse: A Writing Assignment
Each student will complete a 600- to 800-word scholarly paper (not including Title and References
pages) presenting an evidence-based case for what they determine to be The Role of the Nurse;
specifically, as it relates to advocacy in the health care policy development and approval process.
Analyze the role of the nurse by creating a new, or supporting an existing, sustainable
definition of nursing which inspires participation in shaping effective health care policies.
The paper is to focus on themes. Proper use of headings will help to organize the paper and reinforce
consistency for the reader. Refer to pages 47-49, Publication Manual of the American Psychological
Association, 7th Edition for formatting levels of headings.
Students are expected to address the themes listed above by applying concepts and analytical
understanding gained in a literature search of current and acceptable journal articles, videos or
research and any assigned course readings. A minimum of five references should be used. Three of
these sources should be from peer-reviewed articles. See Rubric The Role of the Nurse: A Writing
Assignment for complete grading criteria.
To help organize the paper, focus on the following:
1) Introduction
Much has changed in nursing; however, in many ways, we remain the same. Include a brief
introduction to leading nurse theorists’ fundamental concepts and how they each speak to advocacy in
the health care policy development and approval process. Analyze the role of the nurse by
creating a new, or supporting an existing, sustainable definition of nursing which inspires
participation in shaping effective health care policies.
2) Definition of Nursing
Clearly state your Definition of Nursing. You may certainly subscribe to a leading nurse theorist
(past or present), or you may create a definition of your own. Regardless, explain the rationale for
your chosen definition and why it embodies the value of advocacy in the health care policy
development and approval process. Backed by evidence (make certain, of course, to cite and credit
your sources) present the data; include any relevant statistics or studies as rationale defending your
definition. Make sure to clearly state why you’ve chosen this definition and why you’ve determined
that your definition inspires participation in shaping effective health care policies.
3) Future Vision for the Role of the Nurse
Present your Future Vision for The Role of the Nurse and how this vision supports advocacy
and active participation in the health care policy process. Ask yourself: Is your definition
sustainable? Include the current practice environment and consider any potential threats to your
definition. Put forth realistic circumstances that may challenge your definition and propose creative
and realistic solutions to possible barriers.
4) Summary or Conclusion
Conclude by writing final statements in a way that summarizes content while leaving the reader
impressed. Make every effort to avoid a ‘copy and paste’ approach to your summary. By posing a

question or delivering a thought-provoking final statement, the reader will remain engaged and
(ideally!) interested enough in your topic to research and explore further.
