Guidelines on Writing a “Reading Outline”:

  • A Reading Outline is a 300-word text, written in essay format, summarizing the key ideas and arguments in an article. In this exercise, the conclusion of the article and the most important ideas expressed will be highlighted and reviewed.
  • By reading outlines, I basically mean to Reverse-Outline articles while writing in an essay format and not in bulletin format. You can find how to do reverse outlining in Purdue OWL (Here is the page: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/general_writing/the_writing_process/reverse_outlining.html).
  • Please note that Reading Outlines will not be written in Bullet-point format, but will describe each idea in the article in full sentences and in an essay format with a brief intro, a body and a short conclusion. Please avoid writing too long or too short paragraphs. A standard essay will normally have 4 or 5 paragraphs and each paragraph will focus on a single idea. Please write very brief intros and conclusions. Also, please write in academic format and objective tone.
  • In your Reading Outlines, I will be mainly looking for a deep understanding of the article, picking the most important points of the article, plus a clear and academic reflection of what you have found there. Each of these items will weigh one third of your grade for each paper.
